The One Of A Kind Hall of Fame was created in 1999 to honour the quality, craftsmanship and outstanding achievements of our talented exhibitors. At each Winter and Spring Show, we induct an artist who excels in their chosen medium, creating works that are exceptional both in their construction and in their level of creativity. As a One Of A Kind participant for at least 5 years, our inductees act as ambassadors, and their dedication to the show, and to their craft, is undeniable.
We have been a part of the One Of A Kind Experience since the first show in 1975. lt has been a very interesting ride to where One Of A Kind is today and where it may go. Prior to the start of the show and the development, growth and interest in handmade local items we turned a hobby into a small business.
For over 40 years we have designed and produced our durable products locally from our workshop in Waterloo with some seasonal part-time help. We have opened 2 stores one in Stratford in 1978 representing over 100 artisans which is still in operation and one in Kitchener. Over the past 2 decades more and more we have managed to secure our raw materials in a somewhat unique way. We search out top quality leather and fabric from around the world that is post-industrial. We gather sample hides and surplus first grade leather and fabrics from some of the worlds' most reputable tanneries, those who are also green minded, mostly European based. ln a way we work backwards as we source high end raw materials then decide what we can create from these everchanging discoveries. The cattle industries not a very earth friendly endeavor. To make our footprint on the planet a little bit lighter we choose to work in a more sustainable way. We now generate no new demands on traditional production facilities for the building blocks of our products. We are also able to procure top quality commercial grade upholstery fabric in the same manner as we source our leather. Over 20 years we have donated thousands of meters of fabric and leather on a regular basis to an established community based charity the sales of which help them fund community projects.
As long as our standards remain high our products will speak for themselves with functionality, durability and attention to detail all for a very fair price due to our material sourcing abilities developed slowly over time. Over the years we have preferred to stay small yet we have been fortunate enough to establish a large and very loyal customer base through the One Of A Kind Show.
