JOIN ONE OF A KIND ONLINE

BEFORE YOU APPLY

We are proud of our history as THE place for the best Canadian makers, designers and artisans to show and sell their work. As we pivot to our new home online, there are a lot of things that will change about our show experience, but what remains the same is our commitment to quality and our mandate to support the Canadian craft community. So, before you apply, take a moment to review our Acceptance Criteria and Application Checklist below to ensure that One Of A Kind Online is the right fit for your business!

WHY WE'RE ONE OF A KIND

As we move the One Of A Kind experience online this year, and our platform becomes more accessible than ever, we are looking forward to welcoming new vendors to our community. To ensure that your business is eligible for One Of A Kind Online, please review our Acceptance Criteria.

1. YOU ARE THE DESIGNER AND HEAVILY INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF YOUR WORK

We are looking for makers of all kinds--from traditional to digital and creative to commercially-driven. While our criteria for production will differ from category to category, what remains firm is our commitment to support our creative community and showcas local craft.

Some of our makers create solo; others work with family or a small team; our fashion designers often employ local production help; and exhibitors in our Responsibly Sourced category team up with local makers and manufacturers to bring their creative ideas to fruition. Take care to outline your production process(es) in detail in your application, to demonstrate to the jury that your work aligns with our criteria.

Beyond production guidelines, we are looking for work that is creative, innovative, cohesive, avoids saturated trends and is respectful of copyright law and other cultures.

2. YOU RESIDE IN AND PRODUCE YOUR WORK IN CANADA

Taking into considerations the limitations of current circumstances, particularly holiday deadlines and shipping delays, we have made the decision to allow only makers residing in Canada to participate in our online Winter Show. But with our platform more accessible than ever, we are excited to welcome new makers from across the country to our community this year!

Additionally, we want consumers to support the local creative economy, so every item for sale in the show must also be made in Canada. Any manufacturing help must be locally sourced, but not all raw materials needs to be. Designing products and having them produced overseas is NOT something we permit.

3. YOU MEAN BUSINESS

We like to have fun just as much as the next person but, just like our in-person event, our Virtual Show will be a bigger production than most and we want you to be set up for success! So, we are looking for makers who are on top of all areas of their business, including:

Branding and Marketing: Customers are looking to connect with brands that tell a story, in everything from product photos and packaging to your website and social media.

Product and Packaging Quality: We want to make sure that the aesthetic and quality of the work you sell on OOAK Online matches the level our customers know us for. This also means that you work is suitable, commercially viable, and has appropriate price points in relation to the local market.

Promotion: As part of your participation in the Virtual Show, each vendor is responsible for:

  • Promoting the show through their website, newsletters and/or social media channels.
  • Inviting shoppers to the Facebook Event page.
  • Ongoing social media promotion throughout the show.

And, fear not, One Of A Kind will provide assets, content inspiration and repostable content that vendors can use to fill out their promotion schedule.

4. OUR EXCLUSIVITY PHILOSOPHY

One Of A Kind was born of the need for a place that Canadian makers could show and sell their work. Before e-commerce, and even before retail was open on Sundays, One Of A Kind established itself as the flagship place to buy Canadian handmade. Now, over 40 years later, we are still the best place for modern makers to build their business. And our loyal customer base comes out each year for an exclusive shopping experiencing that highlights the best of the best in the creative community.

So, typically, your One Of A Kind participation would include an exclusivity clause that asks that you be judicious about your participation in other shows around the time of our event. This allows us to create a can't-miss shopping experience that draw out shoppers in large numbers! However, in recognition of our new digital home for the Winter Show, and the challenges faced by our community this year, we will be waiving the clause for participation in this year's online event

WHAT TO SUBMIT

Once you’ve determined that OOAK Online is the right fit for you, it's time to start your application!

Below, we've outlined all of the support materials you will be asked to submit with in application form. Each one will help the jury learn about your business and how we can make the most of our partnership together, so take care to show personality and detail wherever you can.

  • 10 HIGH RESOLUTION PHOTOS OF YOUR WORK
You will be asked to submit 10 high resolution, well-lit photos that represent each type of work you would like to sell at the show. Images should be JPEGs or PNGs and no less than 300 dpi. We cannot stress enough the importance of good photos, as they will be the jury’s introduction to your work and will be used for marketing and PR opportunities, if you are accepted.  NOTE: In order to have the best chance of your product being included in any major marketing features, images should be single product shots on a white background.

  • STEP-BY-STEP DESCRIPTION OF YOUR PRODUCTION PROCESS(ES)
This is probably the most important document in your application package. Each item you wish to sell must be made by you or your company and fit within our production criteria. Take care to walk us through your production process(es)--tell us how you design, where production takes place, how you are involved and when you are getting help. This information will not be shared with anyone outside of the jury.

  • STUDIO PHOTO
Show us where you make the magic happen--whether it's your studio, a maker space, a commercial kitchen or your dining room table! This helps give the jury a sense of the scale of your production.

  • BIOGRAPHY
Tells us about yourself, your brand, what inspires you, your business goals, your education/training (if applicable) and other shows you have participated in.

  • PRICE LIST
This will help the jury get an idea of your pricing and how it compares in the marketplace. Pricing and photos should be present for each type of item you list that you would like to sell.

  • APPLICATION FEE
A $10 application fee will apply to all online applications. Following acceptance into the show, you will receive a contract and invoice for the full payment. In recognition of the extraordinary circumstances this year presents, custom payment plans are available upon request. Once processed, payments are non-refundable.

  • Those selling food or beverage products will be required to submit samples of each type of item they wish to sell for review.
