Currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, ceramic artist Alwyn O’Brien (Salt Spring Island, BC) was the first recipient of the One of a Kind Show/Gardiner Museum Emerging Artist Award in 2007. Mini Bio Artisan Ann Heinonen credits her addiction to Vogue magazine and old movies as her inspiration for her designs. A fine art graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, she initially began with figure drawing and painting. Her focus, however, shifted to fibre arts while raising her family, turning her hobby into a career. With a nod to the past and a love of the tactile, sculptural properties of felted wool manipulated by needle and thread, Ann’s designs celebrate her love of thrifting and her passion for colour. Her 2009 collection, made exclusively for One of a Kind, features hand-selected vintage treasures, reflecting both a sense of flair and a sense of history. A resident of Toronto, Ann works solely out of her home studio.
