Currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, ceramic artist Alwyn O’Brien (Salt Spring Island, BC) was the first recipient of the One of a Kind Show/Gardiner Museum Emerging Artist Award in 2007. Mini Bio I am investigating the human body on many levels, both scientific and psychological. My fashions sketch out some of what determines female and male identity. Each clothing item is accented by a certain aspect of the human anatomy through my simplified embroidered medical illustrations on fabrics. Using found plain t-shirts, shirts and skirts, as well as some vintage items, I build small narratives on my fabrics that, once worn by individuals; my clothes become integrated with the body that wears them. The fashion industry has many similarities to that of the art market; both deal with making original and beautiful objects. These objects accent an individual’s personal style and help to emphasize one’s own unique sense of character and identity.
